This joint complex is made up of two bones, the femoral head (ball portion of the femur) and the acetabulum (socket portion of the pelvic bone).
This ball and socket joint is very stable as a result of the capsule, ligaments, and labrum (cartilage attachment to the socket) that surround the joint.
Labral tear
Labral tear ??“ injury to the cartilage structure attaching to the socket of the hip joint. Typically occurs from a sudden trauma to the hip causing a forced extension or rotation or the hip joint, and can be mistaken for a hip strain. Signs/symptoms include pain in the groin, catching sensation in the groin, weakness, and difficulty with walking or running.
Trochanteric bursitis
Trochanteric bursitis ??“ inflammation involving the bursa (???fluid sac???) underneath the hip abductor tendon (???brings the leg outward???) on the outside of the hip joint. This condition can occur as an acute injury or more commonly from repetitive overuse. Signs/symptoms include pain over the outside of the hip, weakness with hip abduction, and difficulty walking or running.
Hamstring strain ("pulled hamstring")
Hamstring strain ("pulled hamstring") - injury involving the hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh that act to extend the hip joint. Typically occurs from a sudden contraction of the hamstring muscle while the knee is being straightened or the hip is being flexed. Signs/symptoms include pain in the back of the thigh, weakness with hip extension, and difficulty walking or running.
Adductor strain (pulled groin)
Adductor strain (pulled groin) injury involving the adductor muscles on the inside of the hip joint that bring the thighs together.? Typically from a sudden trauma which pulls the leg outward against resistance.? Signs/symptoms include pain, weakness with hip adduction (bringing the thighs together), and difficulty walking or running.
Hip flexor strain (hip pointer)
Hip flexor strain (hip pointer) injury involving the muscles in front of the hip joint that act to flex the hip.? Typically from a sudden trauma which extends (straightens) the hip from a flexed position.? Signs/symptoms include pain, weakness with hip flexion, and difficulty walking or running.
