Podiatrist: a foot doctor. This simplistic definition is, unfortunately, all that the average individual knows about the field of podiatric medicine. A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) is a licensed medical specialist who has successfully completed four years of undergraduate education, four years of graduate education at a podiatric medical college and three years of hospital-based residency training in a course of study comparable to that of a medical doctor (MD).
